A long distance move is stressful for everyone involved. It’s not just packing and moving your stuff, but arriving in a new culture, environment and climate is far from easy. Thankfully, these tips can help reduce some of the stress so that you enjoy a smoother long distance move.
1. Get A Solid Estimate Ahead Of Time
Have a moving company provide a visual estimate of your belongings in order to give you the best estimate possible for moving costs. This also helps movers come prepared to move all of your belongings without issue. If you take it upon yourself to estimate how many moving trucks and boxes you require, on moving day you could end up finding out you need another truck or have to make an additional trip.
2. Calculate Moving Costs Ahead Of Time
Getting a solid estimate helps you produce an accurate calculation of moving costs ahead of time. Knowing exactly, or at least close to, what you’re going to spend is helpful to reduce stress on moving day. Don’t forget to add in packing supplies, the cost of movers, travel costs (food, gas, lodging, etc.), bills at your new and old home, and any other expenses. (Learn how to deduct moving expenses)
3. Start A Moving Notebook
Use a designated notebook to keep track of costs, to-do lists, important business cards and any other information you will need the day you move. Keeping all of this stuff organized in a notebook or binder will make it easier to locate on moving day.
4. Clean Up & Consolidate
Prior to packing it’s time to deep clean your house and get rid of everything you don’t want or currently use. There’s no need to pay to move things that are only going to sit and collect dust at your new home. The less stuff you have to move the less stressful things will be. You will always save time and money by getting rid of unwanted items ahead of time.
5. Document All Valuable Possessions
Before everything gets packed up on the moving truck, make sure to take inventory of all valuable possessions. Take detailed pictures of these items so that you have documented proof of their existence. Make sure that you have replacement insurance on these items so that if they do become damaged, lost or broken you are covered. You can add insurance coverage to your moving package.
6. Pack Everyday Essentials Separately
It could be a few days or even an entire week before you see your possessions again. That’s why it’s important to pack a separate bag with all of your daily necessities such as clean clothes, toothbrush, any medications you take, etc. Always take a little more than you think you need to accommodate unexpected setbacks. Create a checklist of everything you use on a daily basis a week or so prior to packing to help prevent forgetting anything important.
You will keep this bag with you as opposed to putting it on the truck so that you have what you need until your stuff arrives.
7. Label Boxes & Stay Organized
Packing up your entire home makes it all too easy to lose things. Don’t risk losing important family heirlooms or even your favorite gym sneakers. Stay organized when packing, keeping like-items together in labeled boxes. This also makes life easier when you go to unpack.
If boxes are labeled with the room that they belong to movers know exactly where to put them. Otherwise, you could be running all over the place looking for heavy boxes that belong upstairs that were mistakenly left downstairs in the kitchen.
8. Maximize Space In Moving Truck
In order to get the most stuff in the moving truck you want to maximize space through packing processes. In many cases you can leave dresser drawers full as long as they are not filled with books or other really heavy items.
If the furniture becomes too heavy to move you could always carry the drawers out separately until you get to the truck. This allows you to use fewer boxes and less overall space in the truck.
Pack soft items (blankets, pillows, sheets, etc.) in black trash bags and then use as space fillers that double as cushioning inside of the truck.
